She knelt on the floor with her ankles crossed. She had left her face painted completely white that morning except for two black tears. A sheet of paper was laid on the floor in front of her next to a pot of red ink and a brush. She lifted the brush, wrote two characters then wiped the brush clean while watching the ink sink in to the paper. She was saying goodbye. There was a storm ahead and I was the eye of that storm. She knew it maybe even more than I did and for the first time in over a decade I felt guilt and regret. She handed me the paper and quietly disappeared.
