Traitor

about

Heat, sweat and concrete. The city is nearly quiet during these dark hours. The deep orange hue of a street light hums through smoke and steam. A man is standing nearby. Something of a shadow. He’s watching rats jump in and out of a wicker basket that had been dumped there some hours before.
It’s difficult to breathe. The humidity is so dense it feels like it’s pressing the grime of back alleys against my perspiring skin. A second figure appears. Their false smile glints in the dim light. The rats crouch motionless. Their beady eyes transfixed by the new arrival. There’s a hint of a firearm, a hand sliding down a leg searching for the unknown until the unknown quietly appears. A short, sharp blade that had been neatly tucked away. Voices talk of friendship while maintaining a certain distance. It will all be over soon. You know it, I saw it! A slice so deep it becomes deafening with memory and yet I live. I can only assume that the man with the knife didn’t see me in the shadows. Or that he betrayed his very nature.
